The Gate Is Part of a Composition

Decide What Is Being Lit
Entrance lighting serves three separate purposes and they are usually conflated. One is letting a driver find and judge the opening. One is letting somebody read a keypad or an intercom. One is making the entrance look like something after dark. Each wants different fittings in different places, and trying to do all three with one bright light produces glare and does none of them well.
Glare Defeats the Purpose
A fitting that throws light toward the road puts it directly into the eyes of an approaching driver, which contracts their pupils and makes the dark opening harder to see, not easier. Light belongs aimed down and inward, at the surface and at the piers, so the driver sees an illuminated entrance rather than a light source. This is the single most common mistake at private entrances.
Where Fittings Actually Go
Low level fittings along the first stretch of drive define the route without dazzling anybody. Downlights recessed into pier caps wash the pier face and the ground beside it. A small dedicated light at the keypad or intercom, on the same switching as the device, solves the reading problem without lighting the whole entrance. Fittings mounted high and aimed outward solve nothing.
The Address Is a Safety Item
A house number at the head of a long drive is what allows an emergency vehicle to find the property at night, and it is routinely treated as decoration. Numerals need to be large, high contrast against their background, mounted at a height a driver sees, and legible from the road rather than from arm's length at the gate. Discreet is the wrong goal here.

Exterior fittings within reach of salt air need genuinely marine grade housings and stainless fixings, and even then they are consumables rather than permanent installations. Low voltage runs make sense at an entrance where cabling is long and shallow, and every joint belongs in a sealed enclosure. Assume that fittings will be replaced periodically and choose ones that can be, rather than fixtures built into masonry.

Drawings Lie About Scale
An entrance drawn on a page is viewed square on, at a fixed size, with nothing around it. In place it is seen obliquely, at distance, against trees, sky and a house behind it. Almost every entrance that disappoints in reality was drawn correctly and judged in the wrong context. The way to avoid it is to look at the actual site from the actual approach before committing.
Mock It Up on Site
Two poles at the proposed pier positions and a string at the proposed gate height take twenty minutes and answer questions no drawing will. Stand where a car comes from. Stand at the house and look back. Photograph both. The correction that comes out of this is almost always in the same direction, which is that the first design was a little too small.
Height Is Read Against Context
A gate is judged against what is beside it. The same six foot gate looks imposing between low walls and looks apologetic between mature trees and a substantial house. Where a boundary wall or hedge already exists, the gate has to relate to that line: either continuing it, or deliberately rising above it as an event. What does not work is landing slightly below it by accident.
Piers Carry More Visual Weight Than Expected
Pier mass is the element most often underestimated. Piers that look correct in plan frequently look thin in elevation, because in plan you see their footprint and in reality you see their face. A pier reads best when it is clearly more substantial than the gate it holds, and the common failure is piers that are the same visual weight as the leaves, which makes the whole entrance look flat.
Setback Changes Everything
An entrance set well back from the road is seen from further away and needs more presence to register at all. It also needs room for a vehicle to pull off and wait without blocking the road, which is a practical requirement that happens to improve the composition by giving the gate space to be seen in. An entrance hard on the road is seen only in passing and can be quieter without losing anything.

The Pier Is Usually Cladding
A brick or stone pier at an estate entrance reads as a solid column of masonry holding up a heavy gate. In most well built installations it is not doing that at all. Inside it there is a steel post on its own footing, and the masonry is built around that post. The gate hangs from the steel; the pier gives it the appearance it needs and protects the steel from view rather than from load.
Why It Is Built That Way
Masonry is strong in compression and poor at resisting the repeated rotational force a gate applies every time it swings. Bolting hinges into brickwork transfers that force into mortar joints, and mortar joints lose. The steel core takes the moment down into a footing sized for it, and the masonry is left doing the job it is good at, which is standing still and looking permanent.
What Goes Wrong When It Is Not
A gate hung on anchors set directly into a pier will move. It starts as hairline cracking radiating from the upper hinge, progresses to a loose hinge plate, and ends with a section of the pier face pulling away. By that stage the repair is rebuilding the pier around a steel post that should have been there originally, at several times the original cost.
Piers Carry Services Too
The entrance is where power for an operator, cabling for an intercom, a keypad, a camera and lighting all converge, and a pier is the obvious place to run and conceal them. Conduit has to be built in as the pier goes up, because retrofitting a cable route through finished masonry means cutting it. Putting in spare conduit at that stage costs almost nothing and is repeatedly the thing people wish they had done.
Coastal Detailing
The steel core inside a pier is in a damp enclosed environment for its whole life, so its protective treatment matters more than the visible metalwork that can be inspected and touched up. Equally, a pier cap that throws water clear rather than letting it run down the face keeps both the masonry and what is inside it dry. Neither is expensive at build time and neither can be added later.
